I left for my Christmas contract in California at California Great America with RWS on November 10, and have seriously not stopped moving since I got here. We have had 10 hour rehearsal days, six days a week, and if I am being honest, it has been one of the most physically challenging things I have ever done. Although I am exhausted and sore almost constantly right now, we finally finished the show and have our soft opening for park employees tonight!
When I arrived late Thursday evening, my roommate, Stephanie, came out to the parking lot to help me locate which apartment would be our home for the next 8 weeks. Anna is also our house mate, and they are both absolutely amazing, as well as our cast housing.
We have a rental car, that we share as a cast, but there is so much in this area that we can walk to, including a Walgreens and our grocery store, that are really convenient.
Rehearsals began with music for about three days only, assigning solos and harmony, and memorizing it all. We are performing two different shows, the Tree Lighting, which is done with all the other performers in the park, and our show, Cool Yule, so both had to be done.
The park was closed after their Halloween season to prepare all the Winterfest decorations, however, since we are close to Levi Stadium (where the San Fransisco 49s play), on game day, one of the roller coasters was open for the fans to ride, and they let our cast take a break from our rehearsal to ride.
The next few days was learning all of the choreography for the shows. There is a LOT of it, and it moves so quickly, but our cast of champions learned it all and was ready to clean it by day 4.
Some of our local cast members recommended we check out Cream in downtown San Jose after rehearsal, where you can build your own ice cream sandwich, so of course we were all about that. First you choose your base (variety of cookies, brownies, doughnut-croissant, or waffle), and they warm it. Next, you choose your ice cream flavor from their incredibly unique choices, and finally your topping they roll onto the edge of the ice cream sandwich. I, of course, got a funfetti cookie, with birthday cake ice cream, rolled in fruity pebbles, and it was so delicious it almost made me forget about that hilarious time our rental car got locked in the parking garage we parked it in(don't worry we ended up calling security and getting it out).
On our only day off we have had thus far, a majority of us who live in cast housing started our day off with a family style brunch, prepared by Kevin and Stephanie. It was so delicious and a great way to start off the day before venturing to the mall for a bit.
I cannot believe tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and we open shows on Friday. This time is absolutely flying by already, and Mike will be here for Christmas before we know it!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I am grateful this year to be doing what I love, surrounded by wonderful people, both far and near.
