most magical thing about home is it feels good to leave and feels even better to come back

Before we set off on our vacation, my final day of work was finally getting to create some icy magic with Elsa. It was an absolutely incredible day filled with snow flurries in the air and a few in the eyes.

On Sunday, Nov 27 we took the direct 15 hour flight from Hong Kong to Toronto, where Mike's parents met us at the airport.
Masks in Hong Kong are still mandatory and since it was a HK airline we flew with, we had to leave our masks on the whole time. When we got to the Toronto airport, we could officially take our masks off. We were a little hesitant at first since it has been about 2.5 years since we have done this.
We drove 3 hours over the boarder into America, where we had some of our favorite foods right off the bat- Krispy Kreme donuts, colby jack cheese, and ice cream.
We had a family dinner with Mike's family that night and tried to fight through the 12 hour time difference and jet lag. We had to repack and get a good nights sleep before we flew yet again the next day to Orlando. But, we stopped at the airport for a classic Rochester Zweigles hot dog, as one does first.
It was not mandatory to wear a mask on this flight, and it was a pretty empty flight, but we chose to wear them anyways, since we were not used to everyones American flu/cold germs, and we were still pretty used to wearing them.
My mom and sister Bethany picked us up the airport, where we drove to my other sister, Emily's house. We had family dinner (Olive Garden!!) and hung out with my nieces and family, once again, trying to not fall asleep from jet lag.
On Tuesday, Dec 29, and the real reason we have come for a trip home happened. Mike's dream job is an adventure guide with Adventures By Disney, and he has gotten pretty far into the interview process before, but this time they asked him to come to the in person audition portion in Orlando. He had been preparing for weeks, and nailed his speech (in my opinion anyways). We will be leaving Hong Kong in early May, and not sure what the next steps for us will be, but hopefully Mike will be able to follow his dreams, and we will hear something about all this before we go home. His interview was at Disney University, and while he spent the day there, mom and I went and played at Magic Kingdom.
My mom and I went to sort out our Disney tickets for the next few days, and when we arrived at the park, there was availability for the day, so we went into Magic Kingdom to play.
We rode my favorite rides, the parking tram and the monorail (don't try to change my mind).
The cute Christmas decorations were also up at MK! The whole week Mike started counting how often I said "aw look at the cute garland!".

Hellllllo MK castle!
We rode my other favorite (real) ride, Buzz, and had my favorite treat, Mickey pretzels!!
We saw some familiar faces around the kingdom also, which absolutely filled my heart with magic.
We really loved Belle's cottage Christmas decorations!
Hi Snow White!
The Tangled bathrooms still might be one of my favorite things in this park, ever.
I was really sad to learn Ariel's Grotto has not reopened since Covid, so we visited her ride instead.
We also got 'Pixie Dusted', where our fairy godfather sprinkled glitter into our hair with his magic wand, which I am still finding weeks later in my scalp, but no regrets.
We had a reservation pop up for Be Our Guest in Belle and Beasts Castle for lunch, and we had to take it.
The french onion soup was to die for.
For our mains, my mom got the pork chop, which I highlyyyy recommend. I had the steak, which was also great. We were so full from both of these courses, we barely saved room for dessert.
AND dessert was a TRIO of desserts, a delicious raspberry/lemon macaroon, grey stuff tart, and chocolate truffle.
Beast even came into the ballroom to greet everyone while the snow fell in the windows behind him.
We finished our day by visiting the Grand Floridian hotel nearby to see their Christmas gingerbread house and tree.
By this point it was time to go pick up Mike from his interview. We had dinner plans to meet up with our friend Lindsey who was out in HK with me in 2020 and her boyfriend, Guy, at Giordano's Deep Dish Pizza. It was SO good to see her, because we miss her so much! We cannot wait to spend more time together when get home.
The next day was Wednesday, and we spent the morning moseying around Disney Springs.
We went to Chef Art Smith's Homecomin' for lunch, a reservation that took months to secure. With my moms birthday coming up, they even gave us a free piece of hummingbird cake and ice cream.

After food, we walked around, visiting the Christmas store,
checked out the new M&M store,
washed our hands at Basin,
played dress up at the Disney store,
visited the Christmas trees,
and had second dessert during warm cookie hour at Gideon's Bakehouse
We also took the boat over to French Quarter Hotel to get some Mickey beignets for third dessert (oops, when in America...).
We took some Earl of Sandwich home with us for dinner, where we once again hung out with the family to get some quality time together.

The next day was December 1, and time for Mike and I's full day at the parks. We started the day off early at Epcot.

The new system is a virtual cue ride the popular rides like the new Guardians of the Galaxy; Cosmic Rewind. This means you have to play the game of getting up super early and relentlessly tapping your phone to get a boarding pass. We were very nervous we were not going to be able to get the pass, but it worked out, and we ended being in the first boarding group of the day and walking right into the ride. Everything about this ride is incredibly immersive. Since it was the first ride of the day, it did make me a little sick but it was such a cool ride, and with it being Christmas, we got the Christmas song, "Run, run Rocket".
From here, we ran to the other new Epcot attraction, Ratatouille. We rode this in Paris, but we were excited to ride it again. It is such a cute little area as well.
We also met some of my favorite characters, Belle, Mary Poppins, and Snow White and chatted about their cute Christmas decorations and plans.
From here, we grabbed a snack (eggnog donut) and then said goodbye to Epcot and moved on to Hollywood Studios.
Hollywood Studios was a little more crowded, but so festive with it's cute Christmas decorations.
Although I had seen Star Wars Land working during press days back in 2019, Mike had yet to see it. We are not Star Wars movie fans, but the land is so incredibly immersive, it is hard not to get into it.
The food in Star Wars Land was incredible. Some of my highlights of the whole day are eating here. The Ronto Wrap, fried chicken tip yip from Galaxy's Edge's Docking Bay 7, and Oga's Cantina with it's incredible drink selection are definitely on my recommendations list.
There are 2 rides in Galaxy's Edge, Rise of the Resistance and Smuggler's Run. Smuggler's Run you drive your hyper craft vehicle to make deliveries. We had a child driving us and were at the mercy of them not being able to reach the buttons, but Mike and I did our job as gunners to protect the cargo.
Rise of the Resistance is the ride I worked on for press day, and knew what an incredible attraction it is, but Mike had not been on it yet. The ride went down as we were walking toward it, but the line had been over 90 minutes long. We waited in the area for it to go back up and immediately got in line once it did, and only waited about 30 minutes.
Another incredible ride experiences in Hollywood Studios was Mickey's Runaway Railway (which I also did press day for that Mike had not been on).
The only thing I was sad we missed was riding Slinky Dog Dash, but guess that just means we have to come back!
We bumped into some very special people during this day as well. Bayley and Karina were in Hong Kong with me, and Emily who is currently in HK with me had her parents visiting!

One of the best parts of the night was watching Fantasmic. The show has been recently reimagined a bit to include characters like Moana and Elsa, and it's beautiful.
The next day we did Christmas at Magic Kingdom with Mike and my mom. Mike had never seen Magic Kingdom at Christmastime and he was very excited for it (don't worry, I pointed out all the cute holiday garland to him).
We rode some classic rides like Jingle Cruise, Big Thunder Mountain, Haunted Mansion, and of course the people mover.
We also visited everyones favorite bathroom, which holds a little more meaning to me now...
And back where it all began.... but we were sad to see Ariel has still not been swimming here since Covid.
It's no secret that snacks are my love language. We only did half a day at Magic Kingdom, so we did not have time for all the snacks in the world, but we had a few. Jalepeno cheese pretzels, Casey Corner corn dog nuggets, and some dole whip.
Our last activity of the day was watching Flights of Fantasy Parade, where I saw so many familiar faces I could cry. We watched the parade with Emily's parents and after said see you later to them since they will be coming to HK for Christmas!
It was so magical getting to spend a few days at Disney, and remember what that special feeling of being a guest at Christmastime is like. That evening, we had more American food (Papa John's Pizza), and decorated gingerbread houses with the family.
Complete with Etta's special hot cocoa.
It is crazy how much time has passed since we have been home, but it is really obvious when we see the nieces and nephews and how big they have all gotten.
Ailey is even taller than me now!
This is upsetting.
The time to say goodbye to Orlando was inevitable, and as emotional as I thought it would be. Hopefully we will be back soon and it won't be 2.5 years before we see these faces again!
When we landed in New York, it was flurrying a bit, and absolutely freezing. We had a lot of family time in upstate New York, watching the niece and nephews play sports, going on walks, and just hanging out.
Since we had just missed celebrating Thanksgiving at home, we had another small Thanksgiving/Christmas feast, complete with turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, orange jello, several amazing, different kinds of pies, and of course, a family photoshoot in our matching pjs.

That evening in town was the annual light parade, and even though it may not have been Disney's Paint the Night Parade, it was super cute, and I got to meet the Grinch 5 times! There was a beautiful fireworks display after as well.
We really got into the holiday spirit while we were home. We watched holiday Christmas movies and Food Network shows, baked and decorated Christmas cookies, and even played in the tiny bit of snow we got.
We also went to holiday shops, and visited the Rochester Holiday village, complete with ice skating, hot chocolate, and a visit from Santa.
There was even snow!!
We also visited some of the famous Rochester Christmas landmarks, like the Genesee Brewing Company beer keg tree,
The Liberty Pole,
and the Rochester High Falls that change color for the holidays.
One of the best parts about coming home besides seeing family and friends, is AMERICAN FOOOOOOOD and grocery stores and driving in your car to go get both of those things. Please enjoy this photo collage of us doing probably very normal, mundane things to those who live in America, but very exciting to us who have missed these things so much. Things like...
Auntie Anne's soft pretzels
Panera Bread! (Whoever did not tell me they now serve their broccoli cheddar soup with their mac and cheese, this was a mistake, or I would have been home a lot sooner).
Chick-Fil-A (Also, we have forgotten how huge American portions are)
and cheesy, cheesy mozzarella sticks.
and shopping at places like Home Depot...(lol)
and can't forget Target
Where they all sell things like Pillsbury and Little Debbie and Hostess.
Don't worry my babies, I will drive again to you soon. Getting behind the wheel of a car after 2.5 years was also quite the experience.
We brought 2 big 50 pound suitcases home with things that all stay at home, which meant we had 2, 50 pound suitcases to be filled with American snacks to take back to HK, and boy did we do just that.
When the time came to say goodbye, we drove back over the Canadian boarder to take our direct, 15 hour flight back to HK. It was hard to say goodbye, but we know we will be back next year and can't wait to see everyone then.
It was once again time to mask back up, and head back to HK.
The day we landed, the rules for Covid changed once again. We only had to do PCR tests upon landing and on day 2, and do 5 rapid tests and report our results to the government. MUCH easier than things had been before. The jet lag was rough that week, and you could tell by how small my attention span was while trying to cook this grilled cheese...
Christmas is only a few days away, and we are all a flurry trying to get in all our holiday cheer before the big man comes to town! We are glad he came a little early and delivered us the chance to go home for a visit. It was a very special time for all of us.
